What Happens After Your Child Is Accepted To BCIT?

We are excited to welcome you to the BCIT family! Below is an overview of what to expect after your child is accepted to BCIT

1. Acceptance Notification

Upon acceptance, you will receive an acceptance email and an acceptance packet with important information and next steps.

2. Acceptance Acknowledgment

  • To confirm your child's enrollment, parents/guardians must log in to the Genesis Parent Portal and complete the Acknowledgment Form, confirming that your child will attend BCIT. Parents will receive reminder emails to complete this step. If the Acknowledgment Form is not submitted in a timely manner, your child risks losing their spot at BCIT.

Once a student has acknowledged that they will attend BCIT, all communication regarding the next steps must be directed to the school the child will be attending rather than the admissions office.

3. Records Release Form and Required Documents

  • You will be required to submit a second Records Release Form specific to accepted students. This form is different from the one completed during the application process. It allows your child's current school district to send the necessary documents directly to BCIT, including the following:

    • Final grades for the most recent school year.

    • If your child is an incoming 10th-grade student, a transcript is also required.

    • Any changes to address or parent contact information.

    • If only one parent has custody or if both parents share custody but do not live in the same household, please provide custody papers/legal documentation. If a guardian has custody, please provide the appropriate legal documentation.

This form helps ensure that BCIT can collect important documents such as cumulative records, final grades, health/medical records, IEP (if applicable), and 504 plan (if applicable).

4. Course Recommendations

In May, parents will be asked to review and make course recommendations for their child’s academic courses in preparation for the upcoming school year. This will be done through the Parent Portal.

5. Notifying the Sending School District

  • Parents/guardians are required to notify their sending school district of the decision to enroll their child at BCIT and officially withdraw them from the sending school.

  • Some school districts may require a copy of the BCIT acceptance letter as part of the withdrawal process. Please check with your district to confirm their requirements.

  • This step is critical in ensuring a smooth transition to BCIT and must be completed for transportation arrangements and other services to be finalized.

6. Transportation Arrangements

  • Once you notify your sending school district of your intention to enroll at BCIT and withdraw from the sending school, it becomes the responsibility of the sending school district to arrange transportation.

  • The sending district will notify students about their transportation details, and this information will be available in the Parent Portal in late August.

  • Transportation will not be arranged until you have officially withdrawn from the sending school district.

7. Students with an IEP

  • For students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), a meeting will be scheduled by the Child Study Team at BCIT to develop or review the IEP.

  • BCIT ensures that students who are eligible for special education services are placed in the least restrictive educational environment, as determined by the student's needs and as required by state and federal law.

The educational program for each student will be created by the Child Study Team with participation from the family, student, and instructional staff to ensure the best support is provided.

Summer Newsletter

Over the summer, parents will receive a school newsletter from the principal via the email addresses provided. This newsletter will include:

  • A notification in the Parent Portal regarding when your child’s schedule will be available and when forms will need to be completed.

  • Details about new student orientation, where students will receive their school-issued Chromebook. If a student is unable to attend orientation, they will receive their Chromebook during the first days of school.

  • Information about any required forms, including media release forms, updated medical/emergency information, and verification of free/reduced meal status (if applicable).

Exploratories and Schedule Changes

If a student decides to change their selected exploratories, it is important to communicate with the school as soon as possible. Exploratories fill up quickly, and space may be limited.

Changing Your Decision to Attend BCIT

If a student changes their mind about attending BCIT, it is important that parents/guardians notify the counseling department at BCIT immediately. Seats are limited, and BCIT maintains a waitlist of students who may be offered a seat if one becomes available.
